  • The number of chemicals used inside the home has more than doubled since 1950.
  • The average home today contains 62 toxic chemicals - more than a chemistry lab at the turn of the century. More than 72,000 synthetic chemicals have been produced since WW II. Less than 2% of synthetic chemicals have been tested for toxicity, mutagenic and carcinogenic effects, or birth defects. The majority of chemicals have never been tested for long-term effects.
  • Over 25,000 children were exposed to or poisoned by household chlorine bleach.
  • Many household cleaners are full of chemicals that make chores simpler, however these chemicals have their costs. Many give off unhealthy fumes. Some even contain ingredients that are suspected of causing cancer.
  • Children tend to put their hands in their mouths, and they may be putting chemicals in their mouths along with their toys and food. Small amounts may not be immediately harmful, but can accumulate to cause health problems over time.
  • Over 2 million tons of phosphates are used annually in the U.S. to make laundry detergent and automatic dishwashing liquid.
  • When phosphates are discharged into rivers, lakes, estuaries, and oceans they can cause damage to wildlife and result in pollution of the water.
  • Dioxin is highly persistent in the environment and is extremely resistant to chemical or physical breakdown.
  • Dioxin is a family of 75 chemicals technically known as "chorinated dibenzo dioxins." Exposure to dioxin is linked to diabetes, attention deficit disorder, learning disabilities, weakened immune systems, infertility and endometriosis.
